The CSI Rehabilitation Centre—CSIRC—was established as a working organization back in 1992 in Kodaikanal, a hill station in the Palani Range of Tamil Nadu—an important watershed of the Western Ghats of peninsular India. CSIRC gives support to a wide range of young clients, those called “disabled” and formerly outside “normal” society: many of whom show an innate creative and brilliant spark that only needs love and care along with practical guidance to ignite a positive fire of contribution to society at large.
When the world says “No!—You can’t!” to these kids, our goal is to prove the world wrong by assisting our children to come up in the world as ethical and productive members of society with that natural spiritual glow in their hearts. CSIRC provides for the uplift of children and young adults with Polio, Cerebral Palsy, Mental Retardation, Speech and Hearing Impairment, Visual Impairment and other Developmental Disabilities who hail from villages around the Palani Hills and in Kodaikanal town. Without CSIRC this demographic population would be totally unsupported in areas of remedial therapy, medical intervention, education, empowerment, vocational training, residential assistance and just plain being mobilized as contributing members of society. In fact over the past twenty five years CSIRC has helped bring scores of young adults into the fuller picture of their own life force that is evident wherever they go.
CSIRC supports all Differently-abled persons irrespective of condition, personality, background, religion, caste and physical appearance. A program of the Church of South India (CSI) Madurai-Ramnad Diocese, CSIRC sees clearly that by helping others with a leg up, we help society at-large—just as everyone has a right to live and to make practical choices to grow, so does our society locally and globally have the self-expectation to forge a better world for us all to live in. Children and young adults of CSIRC hail from economically disadvantaged families, children of single parents, widows, and destitute women or below poverty line. Contributory services like Education, Vocational Training, Meals, Medical Facilities, Transport, Residential Facility, Mobility Aids, Assistive Devices, Hearing Aids, Learning Aids and School Uniforms are all freely provided. The programs of Residential Home, Orthotic Workshop, Vision, Speech and Hearing Impaired children were carried out in partnership with CBM (Formerly Christoffel Blinden Mission, Germany) and supported till December, 2014. The Diagnostic Day Care Centre interventions are carried out in partnership with Bethania Ministries, USA. The Early Intervention Program is technically supported by Vidya Sagar, Chennai and financed partially by Azim Premji Philanthropic Initiative.
The strength of CSIRC is in the wholehearted and committed Staff that has striven consistently and tirelessly all these years for the empowerment and development of people with disabilities. We have a dedicated Staff that forms the pillars of the Centre. CSIRC aims and objectives are to offer appropriate services both in community-based and campus-centered settings for Education, Vocational training, Resettlement and Rehabilitation of Differently-abled children and adults in and around Kodaikanal.
